Commissioned and published by us in 1998, Remember When, by John A. Dusko, continues to be–in my sincere opinion–one of the most remarkable paintings I have ever seen. Why is this painting of Reading Fairgrounds memorabilia so special you ask? First, the level of detail when closely examined, is amazing. Second, and even more amazing, is that the groundwork for this painting began all the way back in 1970 when...

At around age 6, I began attending the races almost every Friday night with my father. Our weekly visits to the Fairgrounds began on the backstretch. Though visibility was limited--and the hefty chunks of flying clay could actually injure you--the backstretch did have its benefits. When the season began with the chilly March winds blowing , and ended with November's temperatures plummeting, it was sure nice to be able to hop into the old jalopy and get dethawed!

My collecting days began when we made the "big" move to the grandstand.  When the modified races ended, the race to leave began. My father and I quickly realized that it was much more pleasant to hang around the grandstand until the crowd thinned out. The first night we did this I noticed that many people left without their programs.  It was then that I became "The Collector." Every Friday night I prowled the empty stands for the Racer Programs left behind.

Who would have thought that those same Racer Programs collected by a 6 year old in 1970, would be used 28 years later as reference in creating the masterpiece, Remember When. Although the memorabilia used in creating the painting is part of my childhood collection, it is by no means unique to me. For every article I collected, thousands    of others went home and are safely tucked away in their own treasured memory boxes.  It is my hope that this print will compel you to open up your memory boxes again and again. . .and remember when.
